Toolkit runs fine when running Deploy-Application.ps1 but not when running .EXE

Hello people,

This is my third or so packaging with PSAppDeployToolkit so im more or less a beginner.

Although now when ive tried to package Pulse Secure i cant get it to run fully.

When trying to run the Deploy-Application.exe i see that it creates a process in task manager not using any CPU if that makes any difference, when monitoring it with procmon it continuously logs tasks but the installation never seems to run/start.

Although when running the Deploy-Application.ps1 with admin rights in ISE it works with no issues.

As i want to deploy this with SCCM with the Deploy-Application.exe as i have with my other deployments to have it streamlined i would very much appreciate any help!

And for anyone wanting to comment how i’ve not used “Execute-MSI” its because of the CONFIGFILE doesnt seem to want to load/import correctly

Edit to add: When trying to run with the EXE there is nothing being logged to C:\Windows\Logs\Software

Thanks!

.SYNOPSIS
This script performs the installation or uninstallation of an application(s).

PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit - Provides a set of functions to perform common application deployment tasks on Windows.

.DESCRIPTION
The script is provided as a template to perform an install or uninstall of an application(s).
The script either performs an "Install" deployment type or an "Uninstall" deployment type.
The install deployment type is broken down into 3 main sections/phases: Pre-Install, Install, and Post-Install.
The script dot-sources the AppDeployToolkitMain.ps1 script which contains the logic and functions required to install or uninstall an application.
.PARAMETER DeploymentType
The type of deployment to perform. Default is: Install.
.PARAMETER DeployMode
Specifies whether the installation should be run in Interactive, Silent, or NonInteractive mode. Default is: Interactive. Options: Interactive = Shows dialogs, Silent = No dialogs, NonInteractive = Very silent, i.e. no blocking apps. NonInteractive mode is automatically set if it is detected that the process is not user interactive.
.PARAMETER AllowRebootPassThru
Allows the 3010 return code (requires restart) to be passed back to the parent process (e.g. SCCM) if detected from an installation. If 3010 is passed back to SCCM, a reboot prompt will be triggered.
.PARAMETER TerminalServerMode
Changes to "user install mode" and back to "user execute mode" for installing/uninstalling applications for Remote Destkop Session Hosts/Citrix servers.
.PARAMETER DisableLogging
Disables logging to file for the script. Default is: $false.
.EXAMPLE
    powershell.exe -Command "& { & '.\Deploy-Application.ps1' -DeployMode 'Silent'; Exit $LastExitCode }"
.EXAMPLE
    powershell.exe -Command "& { & '.\Deploy-Application.ps1' -AllowRebootPassThru; Exit $LastExitCode }"
.EXAMPLE
    powershell.exe -Command "& { & '.\Deploy-Application.ps1' -DeploymentType 'Uninstall'; Exit $LastExitCode }"
.EXAMPLE
    Deploy-Application.exe -DeploymentType "Install" -DeployMode "Silent"

What command line are you using when you are trying to use the .exe? It should be something like this:

Deploy-Application.exe scriptname.ps1 -deploymenttype Install

We also use serviceui.exe with ours, so that might help you as well.

It’s not logging because you aren’t using execute-msi. Try this line:

$config = “C:\Secure Pulse 9.1.14\SBAB-Mgnt-Client-2.pulsepreconfig”

Execute-MSI -Action ‘Install’ -Path “$dirfiles\Secure Pulse 9.1.14\PulseSecurex64.msi” -Parameters “CONFIG=$config /qn”

NOTE, this assumes you have the Secure Pulse 9.1.14 directory in the files directory of the Toolkit

Second Note,

The value for the $config variable may need to look like this:

$config = ‘“C:\Secure Pulse 9.1.14\SBAB-Mgnt-Client-2.pulsepreconfig”’

  1. You do not need to copy locally to install. SCCM will take care of that.
  2. What CONFIGFILE?
  3. No log file in C:\Windows\Logs\Software == the PSADT script did not run
